Top 10 Texas Holdem poker tips to improve your game

Whether you are a professional poker player or just starting out, there are a few worthwhile poker tips to remember when playing Texas Holdem Poker.

1. Do not play every single hand and fold more often

This is one of the most common mistakes poker players make. They are excited and want in on the action all the time. In the process, they lose too much chips. In poker, it is important to know when to play and when to fold. A general rule of thumb would be to fold more than half the cards you are dealt.

2. Don’t play while under the influence

This tip goes without saying. Basically, doing anything under the influence of drugs or alcohol will not turn out good. In this way poker players end up throwing valuable chips away, and losing heaps of money in the process.

3. Don’t bluff for the sake of bluffing

Remember that bluffing is not an essential part of the game. Many players starting out believe that in poker, you need to bluff in order to win. This is not true as there are no rules stating that you have to bluff while playing poker. Bluffs only work in certain situations and with certain types of players. Remember that some players cannot be bluffed, so save your bluffing for when it really matters.

4. Don’t stay in a hand just because you are already deep into it

Another common mistake – many newbie players think they should stick out the rest of the game just because they contributed a lot of chips in the pot. There may be cases when pot odds lead to a call, but if you are certain you will not win, fold. The money you have added to the pot is probably already loss, so don’t lose any more.

5. Don’t call at the end of a hand to keep someone honest

If you feel a fellow player has the hand he is standing behind it’s not worth calling because you will end up losing money either way.

6. Do not play when you are in a bad mood or under stress

Poker should not be an escape from your day-today problems. Do not play when you have problems weighing heavy on your shoulders or when under stress. Emotions are a huge part of the game, and will work for or against you in a big way.  If you feel your emotions are taking over, it is a good idea to walk away and take a break.

7. Look at the cards on the table

When you begin your game, pay attention to your own hand but also look around on what is going on at the table. Try to figure out what the best possible hand is, and make sure that you are thinking of flush and straight possibilities. See who is betting what and make a mental note.

8. Look at the other players at the table

One of the most important things you can do while playing Texas Holdem is to observe your opponents and how they are playing. This takes some experience and know-how, especially if you are playing online.

9. Don’t play at the big tables until you are ready

Just because you are consistently winning at a low level, does not mean you will continue your good fortune at the higher stakes games. Stick to what you know until you are completely ready to raise the stakes.

10. Pick a game suited to your skill level and bankroll

Remember that the moment the stakes are raised, so does player skill. Stick to playing games at your own level to prevent big losses.
